The Lifestyle Entrepreneur: How To Build Your Business Around Your Life

What is a lifestyle entrepreneur? A catchy label? A cliche marketing term? Probably both of those… yes. But more importantly, a lifestyle entrepreneur is someone who asks the question “how do I build my business around my life, instead of the other way around?”

I think we should all ask this question, considering the majority of our time in this life will likely be spent on some kind of “work.” If we’re willing to challenge the status quo, we can work when we want, where we want, and have a good time doing it.

It’s easy for this stuff to sound airy and theoretical, so check out this video I made that gives a concrete example of what being a lifestyle entrepreneur means for me:

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Confucius

I live in Seattle, and this time of year, I hear numerous people talk about how they go into work when it’s dark, and they leave when it’s dark. Now, we could make this into quite the philosophical discussion, but they literally never see the light of day.

This reminds me of the line from the movie Office Space where Peter says “we don’t have a lot of time on this Earth, we weren’t meant to spend it this way.” Do you feel this way about your 9-5? Do you think there might be another option?

Well, at a certain point, I snapped and decided I’d had enough. Internally I snapped at least… Externally, I decided I would do whatever it took to feel free and like I was having a more positive impact on the world.

Unless you’re at the top, our current corporate culture doesn’t allow the freedom that I wanted. At least, not 99% of it. (If you have a job where you actually feel free, valued, and happy, keep it!) So the answer is to be your own boss, build your own business, and make your own way.

There are some obvious reasons that stop people from doing this. The #1 fear people have is that they won’t be able to pay the bills. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. You don’t have to feel isolated and alone. Find a partner or a community for mutual support. Learn from other people who are doing what you want to do.
  2. You don’t have to quit your job today. The first step is getting that second stream of income. This is Warren Buffet’s best piece of advice to people trying to increase their financial position.
  3. If it were easy, everyone would do it. Be willing to put in the hard “work” to build a business of value. If you’re following your passion, it won’t even feel like work.

I always find it funny that the #1 reason people keep their jobs is the security. To translate, that means having a single source of income that could end at any time due to the economy, health, industry factors, or other reasons is the safe route…

Really, it’s not funny. It’s sad, and that’s why I quit my job… to help you quit yours. Our outdated education and corporate systems are changing, and I intend to be part of that change. Do you?
