The Lifestyle Entrepreneur: When To Take A “Day Off”

Check out this previous entry: The Lifestyle Entrepreneur: How To Build Your Business Around Your Life.

That talks more about taking control of your time, working when you want, and doing whatever else you want, whenever you want to. There will always be limitations, but designing your work around how you want to live your life, instead of the other way around, is what being a lifestyle entrepreneur is all about.

Today’s entry is more about the flip-side… It sounds great to be able to run your own schedule, but that doesn’t mean fun and games all the time. The majority of our time will still be devoted to work or study of some kind.

“If you apply yourself to study, you will avoid all boredom with life…” – Seneca

In his book, On The Shortness of Life, he says that we SHOULD spend the majority of our lives on “study” of some kind. The key, though, is that he’s not talking about what most people think of as work. Does the below formula sound like your job?

1 hour road rage + 1 hour breaks + 8 hours unfulfilling grind = 9-5

(or 8-6 as it may be…)

So the other side of the coin that I’m talking about is this: When other people are getting a day “off,” you’re still on. There are many possible reasons for this, but here are some reasons that it’s still good news:

  1. It’s not hard to be “on” when you enjoy your work
  2. It’s easier when you can make your schedule work for you
  3. You feel in control, empowered, and free

Maybe it’s a holiday, weekend, or snow day… Check out this short video I made on a rare snow day in Seattle:

Here’s another way to think about it, in the form of a question: Do you enjoy grinding through your job, looking forward to Friday or a lucky snow day? Or, would you rather enjoy relaxing and taking time off, and looking forward to getting back to work?

We all have the power to create a life of more impact, freedom, and fun, and that’s what our members are doing day in and day out. And we hope that this concept will empower you to take a small step by becoming a member, and start to see that the leap from employee to entrepreneur (a lifestyle entrepreneur) is within your grasp.
